Writing that takes you somewhere

I’ve spent more than two decades writing about France – its food, its landscapes, its history and the people that make it extraordinary. My aim is always the same: to craft features and articles that don’t just inform but make the reader feel as though they have travelled with me. I have lost count of comments on my writing that say: ‘You just make me want to go!’.

As a regular contributor to The Guardian, The Times and Sunday Times, National Geographic Traveller, BBC Travel and many other titles, I’ve written about subjects as wide-ranging as the secret history of absinthe, to the chefs leading France’s quiet revolution in vegetable cookery. I write with authority, warmth and a genuine love for the subject.

My specialist subjects

I can write about a huge range of subjects including travel in France, culinary travel, French regional food and cuisine, food culture and gastronomy, French history and heritage, producers and artisans, markets and ingredients, cheeses, chefs and restaurants, and how landscapes, terroir and culture shape the food on our plate, as well as the folklore behind ingredients and dishes.

I write long-form features, and also write destination guides, travel essays, chef and producer interviews, profiles, opinion pieces and tourist board guides.

I also take on brand content for the right partners, and as an experienced editor, I can shape a publication from commission to print.

Selected stories

The Guardian • The Times • The Sunday Times • National Geographic Traveller • National Geographic Traveller FOOD • BBC Travel • Club Oenologique Magazine • Financial Times • Delicious Magazine • BBC Good Food • Woman & Home • France Magazine (Editor, 2006–2016) • and many more.

A readership that acts

My readers don’t just read, they go. Audiences follow up my features in The Guardian, The Times and National Geographic Traveller, with their own trips inspired by what they’ve read. They take my book Amuse Bouche: How to Eat Your Way Around France with them and it is annotated, consulted and packed for the next trip. It shapes their bookings, their restaurant choices, their itineraries, and often I hear back from them telling me what a great trip they had, ‘We would never have discovered it without you’. Meanwhile, my France Traveller newsletter on Substack is followed by more than 1,600 subscribers worldwide, with over a third in the US and a third in the UK. It reaches precisely the kind of reader editors and brands want to find: curious, engaged, and ready to travel.

Awards & recognition

France Magazine – a decade at the helm

From 2006 to 2016, I was editor of France Magazine, the award-winning, leading English-language publication on France, with dedicated editions in the UK and North America. Leading the curation and production of more than 200 issues, I covered every region of the country, interviewed figures from French political and cultural life, and worked with some of the finest writers, photographers and editors in the industry. It gave me an unrivalled knowledge of France, its varied landscapes, its best destinations, its food culture, and the insight that the best stories are rarely found in the obvious places.

As both a writer and an editor who has commissioned and shaped thousands of pieces, I understand the craft from every angle. If you need someone who can write beautifully and deliver reliably, I know exactly what that takes.

Commissions

If you’re an editor, publisher or brand looking for authoritative, beautifully written articles, features and content about France, its food, its travel and its culture, I’d love to hear from you. I bring both expertise and genuine enthusiasm, and I’m committed to making every collaboration as smooth and enjoyable as possible. I am open to discussing all kinds of content: my network includes podcast and radio producers, photographers, designers and publishers which means the possibilities for high quality collaborations are wide and varied.
