Lockdowns aren’t much fun, but they do concentrate your mind on what you want from your career and (to paraphrase The Spice Girls) what you really, really want. And I wanted to write about all the fascinating stories behind France’s regional foods, to tell readers where to find them, how eat them (or cook them) and what they tell you about their little corner of L’Hexagone. I started to think about all these stories after the Onion Johnnies story in 2018, and began to pull together the idea in 2019. Not having much other work throughout 2020, I had the chance to write the proposal proper and then I honed it, rewrote it, got an agent (the brilliant Charlotte Merritt at Andrew Nurnberg Associates), rewrote it some more, and then we submitted it to publishers. I couldn’t have wished for a better response than that from Cecily Gayford at Profile Books and so, together with them, Amuse Bouche: How To Eat Your Way Around France will be published in 2024.
